AlphaSongs is a perfect adjunct to Annie Ape: The Magic Bullet to Literacy. It does, in lyric and melody, what Annie does to printed word and illustration.

AlphaSongs is a CD collection of songs; one for each letter of the alphabet. The tunes, some reminiscent, are all memorable. The flavors range from Western to Arabian. Listen for the sound effects in the background. They'll make you smile.

Activities that accompany each song are posted on the internet. For example, take the letter Q.



Other than in abbreviations, Qatar, and qiviut (the soft, silky undercoat of the arctic muskox), U invariably follows Q. The activity suggests that "q" and "u" are actually engaged. Here are the directions for the wedding ceremony.

"Plan a ceremony for the happy couple, complete with ring bearer, flower girl, minister (or justice of the peace), and music (Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling in Love With U" works nicely).

The bride and groom can wear die cuts of their letter, and the guests can wear word cards containing the letters Qu. Recommended guests include Quack, Quick, Quiet (you'll hardly know she's there), Quail, Question, Quilt, and of course the Queen. For that added touch of class, offer cake decorated with the letters Q and U.

Make the ceremony as schmaltzy as possible, and I guarantee the participants will not only remember the sound of Q, but they will never forget its constant companion.

All songs were written by Greg Whitfield, a professional musician and Kindergarten teacher. These are not typical alphabet letter songs. They are much more than that...letter name, letter sound(s), phonemic awareness, and memory are just a few of the skills that are taught through song.
